The blue square is done!

Finished the 19" x 19" blue square that goes in the upper left corner of the flag. It came out to be 64 rows of single crochet.

It took about about 10 hours to complete with 1 skein of RedHeart® Super Saver® in Soft Navy. I did it over the span of 3 days during my free time. Here's what the stars looked like arranged on the blue:

I think it's coming along rather nicel and have to say, I'm very excited. I'll start working on the red and white stripes soon!

Flag progress:

Sometimes I don't feel like doing homework, so I crochet. -Story of my life. At any rate, I started work on a 19" by 19" blue square for the flag project I'm working on. Trying to make it look something like this:

This flag is actually a type of Union flag from the American Civil War. My school project is supposed to be a minimum of 30 hours, 10 hours research, 20 hours actual work, and somehow tie in with what we've been learning. Other than that, it can be pretty much anything. I decided to crochet because....well...I love crafting. But I wanted my project to have something to do with the civil war and American patriotism (since we've been learning a lot about that).

The Union actually had a plethora of different flags because one design hadn't really been set. The design I chose stuck out to me because of the pretty circle pattern of the stars.

So far I have all 35 stars crocheted, I'll sew those on once I'm done with the blue square background. (That blue and green thing at the center is actually my hook case...not my progress. Heh.)

These are the stars for the American flag I'm working on. The top one is just a smidge bigger than the lower one. A smidge bigger was too big so I had to downsize. Aren't they adorable? I modified the original pattern quite a bit, so I figured I'd post the pattern for people who just may need teeny-tiny, itty-bitty stars.  They really are small, about an inch across. Absolutely perfect for scraps of yarn that you don't know what to do with. You can make them in different colors, sew them on things, put 'em darlings in a bowl and let your kids play with them... Anyway, I used worsted weight yarn (you can experiment with different kinds) and a US size E hook (3.50mm).

  • ch 4, sl st to join to first ch
  • ch 2 (counts as 1 hdc), hdc 9 in ring, sl st to join (10 hdc)
  • *sc 1, ch 2, sl st in 2nd ch from hook, 1 sc in same st as 1st sc
  •
  • sl st in next st
  • repeat from * 4 more times
  • fasten off and weave in ends
  • adore your stars!
